2. Emotional Intelligence
👉🏻Moving back to Goleman...
Goleman’s book provided new insights to intelligence and demonstrated through his research how a high IQ does not necessarily lead to success. He identified other qualities which he argued characterizes successful people, such as social competence, self-control, enthusiasm, patience, sympathy and ability to self-motivate.
✨He also argued that these abilities can be taught and improved throughout life.
🚨I know a lot of you are thinking... but what about for the neurodiverse community and different mental health conditions... this content is coming!
❓There is still some debate about what exactly EI/ EQ is and how best to measure it, but there is general agreement that it involves five key components:
👉🏻Self-awareness
👉🏻Self-regulation
👉🏻Motivation
👉🏻Empathy
👉🏻Social skills
Let's run through them here:
👉🏻Self-awareness is the ability to understand your own emotions and how they impact your thoughts and behaviors. It also includes being aware of how your words and actions affect others.
👉🏻Self-regulation is the ability to control your emotions and impulses, even in difficult or challenging situations. This means being able to stay calm and collected, rather than reacting emotionally or impulsively.
👉🏻Motivation is the drive to achieve your goals, even when things are tough. It’s about having a positive outlook and staying focused on what you want to achieve, even when obstacles arise.
👉🏻Empathy is the ability to understand and share the emotions of others. It’s about being able to see things from another person’s perspective and feel compassion for their situation.
👉🏻Social skills are the abilities we use to interact with others effectively. This includes things like communication, cooperation, and conflict resolution.
