A return to one that got away all the way back in 2019. The Sphinx is a modern classic, a line that redefined the possibilities and helped usher in the age of Alaskan freeriding. In 2019 I arrived to less than stellar conditions and an inexperienced approach to climbing steep lines. My decade plus of freeriding in AK did little to prepare me for the experience of climbing steep, exposed lines like The Sphinx. So going back this season felt like a progress meter, a measuring stick to gauge how far I’ve come in this style of skiing.
