It’s Latine/x History Month. This month is always fun when it comes around. I love celebrating Latine/x literature and history any time I get the chance to on this platform. As a reader, I find it very valuable to have this literature available and accessible. • As the years go by, the books I pick up and read change. I was seventeen when I created this account. Seventeen-year-old Oscar would be shook to find out that at twenty-two I love reading poetry and nonfiction. I was out here reading thrillers and suspense novels when I created this account. No shade towards those books. We stan. But I also know Oscar from five years ago would be grateful to have found literature that makes him feel seen and not so alone. This year has been special. Translated fiction from Latin America entered the chat and has never left. And we kiking. These books though. Wow. Latin America has been writing!!! These writers are thinking and writing about everything from incarceration to LGBTQ+ visibility to machismo to the grotesque to love. Everything! It has been an eye-opening experience to read these works from a place in the world I connect to so deeply. The literature from Latin America is super rich and beautiful and complex and alive—I wish I would have found these books and writers sooner. But that’s what I’m trying to get at. Growing up I was made to think that this literature didn’t exist. That’s BS. There’s way more. So much more. • This year if you’re going to read any Latine/x titles consider putting some translated books coming from Latin America in your TBR. This literature is rich and beautiful.
