Eastern Kentucky is a bright, shining example of community in action. When the historic floods devastated 12 counties, 7 schools and left at least 37 dead— there was no need to wait for outside hands to help. Families and friends went from home to home, rescuing, mucking out, tending and consoling. A community full of families who, despite their hard work, are living paycheck to paycheck (on average, 70% of families in this region live on $50,000/year or less).
.
@savethechildren is proud of our history and presence in these rural towns. We serve families in 16 counties of Eastern Kentucky, running extensive programs from birth through home visiting, in-school, after-school and summer literacy— feeding programs and a social emotional curriculum. We have filled the schools’ libraries with books and computers. And, when 10” of rain fell in two hours, flooding the region, we were immediate, boots on the ground responders, dispensing water, food, clothing, diapers (thank you, @baby2baby), toys, books—whatever the families need.
.
When the cameras turn from E. Kentucky, @savethechildren will still be there, helping to get kids back to school, training caregivers and teachers in and implementing our trauma informed curriculum, Journey of Hope, throughout the region, rebuilding libraries and all around being good neighbors.
.
Thank you to @cynthiamcfadden and the amazing team from @nbcnews for your humanity, generosity, and mastery. Thank you to a team I adore—@savethechildren Kentucky—Shane Garver, Angie Boggs, Alissa Taylor, Chelsie Hinkle, and many hardworking others—making every visit efficient, impactful and chock full of heart.
.
Thank you to everyone who has donated so generously to Save The Children’s efforts in Kentucky—as Superintendent Jett says,, “Don’t let the support stop when the cameras stop rolling. @savethechildren never does that”. There is a link to donate in bio. ♥️
