3. Emotional intelligence and neurodiversity
Emotional intelligence may be challenging for some in the neurodiverse community. For example, Autism can make it difficult to read and respond to the emotion of others. Likewise, with other conditions such as ADHD, studies have found that those with the condition often struggle with executive functioning skills, which can include the regulation of emotions. Every person is difficult however However, there are ways to work around these challenges and develop emotional intelligence skills.
There are a number of reasons why the neurodiverse community find EQ challenging. But I also believe that neurodiversity can help with understanding people better... As someone with ADHD, I'm often drawn to others with ADHD, even if I don't know they have a diagnosis. What are your thoughts on that?
Another example of challenges is with emotional regulation. As someone with ADHD I resonate with having high emotional intelligence but have in the past and still sometimes currently, had difficulty with self-regulation due to impulsivity.
I had a very challenging time regulating my emotions as a child, which also caused challenges (and some trauma) for me as an adult. I have worked extremely hard on my self-awareness and regulation... but man it's tough sometimes!
I will always be a work in progress, which I find very exciting because I can then relate to others with more ease.
I haven't delved into this topic deeply, but I can!
