Five years ago the hashtag #MeToo sparked a global conversation about sexual harassment. On 15 October 2017, a tweet by actor Alyssa Milano invited women to share their experiences of sexual harassment under the words “Me Too”. The hashtag came days after The New York Times published an article exposing US film producer Harvey Weinstein’s abuses. The 70-year-old is currently serving a 23-year prison sentence in New York for sexual assaults including rape. His trial for further abuses in Los Angeles started this week. #MeToo became a trending topic on social media and has become a well-known call to action globally.
