Think you know Golden Gate Park? We teamed up with our friends at @sfparksalliance to dig up some little known facts about the beloved park 🥯Golden Gate Park is 20% bigger than NYC’s Central Park (and our bagels are better...), though it was almost designed by the same architect, Frederic Law Olmsted. He thought that it was impossible to create a good park in the sand dunes that once covered SF’s western edge. 👨‍💼William Hammond Hall, the park’s eventual designer, was just 25 years old (the same age most of us are buying our first IKEA couch) when he showed the world that you could, in fact, build a park there. 🎠Debuting in 1888, the Koret Children’s Playground just off Kezar Drive was the first-ever public playground in the US (though if built today, would probably be a dog park). 🏡The most famous current residents are bison, but after the 1906 earthquake over 40,000 SF residents made the park their temporary home. 🇳🇱 The Dutch and Murphy windmills at the west edge of the park were originally built to pump 30,000 gallons of water per day for park irrigation, and are known in the Netherlands as the "SF giants." 📸: @ilysanfrancisco
