For this #FossilFriday, we’re throwing it back to 1956. Notice anything... different? 🦖 When T. rex was mounted in the Museum’s fossil halls in 1917, it had a standing posture in which its tail dragged along the ground behind it. Though we now know this upright stance to be incorrect, the pose became an iconic one, and inspired many visualizations of the “tyrant lizard” in popular culture, including the unforgettable cover of Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park. Science is always changing based on new research and discoveries, and in the early 1990s, T. rex was updated as our understanding of dinosaurs evolved. Its tail was lifted and its head lowered, eliminating the Godzilla-like posture of the original mount. Instead, preparators and curators posed the fossil in the stalking posture for which it is now known. Photo: Image 324201, © AMNH Library #dinosaurs #dinosaur #trex #fossils #fossil #amnh #museum
