“Hey I started a disc golf team!” This is what my brother told me back in 2019, his freshman year at OBU. I had already been playing almost a year and a half at that point, but not consistently to the point where I could be good at the game. Caleb recognized that and wanted to help me. It looked like my education would continue at OBU, and Caleb needed strong players he could trust to play. That’s when it became real. Disc golf became a daily part of my life, and became competitive, rather than just recreational. Until I had got into college, I had never actually played a real disc golf tournament. My brother asked me in October if I wanted to play a doubles tournament with him, and we ended up placing second. This drove me to want to do better in a more competitive environment. A few days later, Caleb called me and told me that we had been invited to nationals and that he wanted me to be on the B-Team for the tournament. Of course, I said yes. Although this meant I would not get to play with him as my partner. I knew there were better players on the team, but that did not stop me from wanting to get better. A lot of work went into preparation for the week of nationals. Great friends and family surrounded me and pushed me to do my best. The hardest week I had was the week before we left. I was not hitting my shots or making very many putts. I was scared I was going to let my team down. I prayed and prayed that God would allow me the strength and the endurance to help me fight through these rounds and play to the best of my ability. God answered and said, “Trust me.” The day before our practice rounds, it was decided that I would be on the A-Team with my brother. I didn’t show it, but I was the happiest person ever. To be on one of the biggest stages disc golf had to offer, and play it with my big brother? Heck yes! We battled through a week of hot, windy, and rainy conditions, but we shot -32 this week that ranked us top 20 in the nation! I could not have done it without all the support from my friends and family who are always motivating me to do my best. I thank God for the ability to play this sport and to give it my all.
