@mitarchitecture A Research Studio Conversation with Joseph Choma + Maya Hayuk OCT 21, 6PM EST - LINK IN BIO // Collaborators with the fa21 studio Making Ingredients with Diego Pinochet + Lavender Tessmer @lavendertessmer @diegopinochet Fall 2021 Lecture Series / Presented with the Architecture and Urbanism Group Joseph Choma @josephchomadesign is the Founder of the Design Topology Lab and an Associate Professor of Architecture at Clemson University, where he directs the Master of Science in Architecture program. As a researcher, his interests lie at the intersection of mathematics, folding, structure and materials. He is the author of three books: Morphing: A Guide to Mathematical Transformations for Architects and Designers (Laurence King Publishing, 2015), Études for Architects (Routledge, 2018), and The Philosophy of Dumbness (ORO Editions, 2020). Currently he is completing a PhD in Architecture at the University of Cambridge, UK where he is a Cambridge International Scholar. Maya Hayuk @mayahayuk is a Ukrainian-American artist with an extensive background in a wide range of generative art and social practices in the studio and with architecture seen on every continent but Antarctica. Her iconic, improvised experiments speak to the artist’s obsession with symmetry, “perfect imperfection” and outer/ inner space as they conjure woven, knit and embroidered handiwork re-proportioned on a massive scale. Visual information from her immediate surroundings toggle together into elaborate, painterly abstractions, thus creating an engaging mix of referents from popular culture and advanced painting practices alike. Hayuk considers her painting, printmaking, photography, music and mural practices as all equally relational and symbiotic.
