It’s inevitable. Every time someone asks me what kind of photography I do... I will usually say, “I’m an international wedding photographer, but I also shoot a lot of boudoir sessions.” It’s inevitable that I get some weird looks... or some giggles... or a joke followed up with “bow chicka wow wow.” Internally, I roll my eyes. Externally, I laugh at their joke, and say... “Yeah, I know, right? It’s so much fun though. I absolutely love it.” The stereotype around boudoir is understandable. Historically, it’s been a genre of photography that teeters on the line taboo. Its harsh studio light, stiletto heels, skimpy outfits, and those “I’m trying too hard to be sexy” poses have given it a bad rap. Offering boudoir for my clients really doesn’t have much to do with being sexy though. It has everything to do with feeling powerful in your own skin. It is about giving an intimate gift to the one you love (or yourself). It is far more about being vulnerable, loving yourself, and wanting to celebrate who you are on the inside just as much as the outside. Every woman who leaves my studio is smiling ear to ear as they walk out. There has never been one person who didn’t love the experience of it all. Yes, I’m good at what I do, and I make it fun and easy... but there’s more to it than that. It’s as if a weight lifts from my client’s shoulders. Pounds of self-doubt and criticism seem to float away and that allows my client breathe in a few hours of acceptance and self-love. It’s seriously euphoric.
