Ten years ago today we lost our beloved crew member of many years, Scott Johnson. I still think about him often, as I imagine most people who knew him do too. Every time I see an old VW camper, or a ‘proper’ Beetle (the rattier the better) I imagine him nodding in approval. When I’m talking drums with someone, I know he’d have some insight or opinion that would shine a light on the conversation. So many people in the music industry knew him and have offered condolences - I don’t imagine he realised just how highly regarded his work was, and how fondly people thought of him. Every time I go through photos from the first decade of touring he’ll be there, smiling. Any live video from that era - he’ll more than likely be at the side of stage, still smiling. Venues and cities hold fond memories of time together on tour. Scott was brilliant in so many ways, but especially as a friend. In 2007 he made me the snare drum pictured. He had it painted in the same beautiful shade of green as my silly Aston Martin of the time. The car is long gone, but the drum remains - possibly my most treasured possession. I keep it at home where I practise, and every time I change the head I see the sticker inside - the 007 serial number was a joke by the way. It sounds great, but I’m never going to take it on the road - far too much risk of it getting bashed or dropped or lost or stolen. If any of this means anything, it is to emphasise how much we all loved Scott, and how sorely he is missed. I know many people will be feeling very sad today and they are in our thoughts too, especially his parents, Ken and Sue. I’m also thinking of Radiohead, and their crew. I know a lot of you have memories of Scott too, handing out setlists after a show (smiling!), or just being such a key member of our team for so long. Rest in peace. Richard
