Yesterday I was discussing an area of Sydney in which I had recently lived that I felt had no cultural diversity outside of its majority population. I had enjoyed my time living there, but had often felt loneliness being the only non white person at a bbq or halloween for example. It wasn’t an extreme hardship, but it is a feeling that can be relevant at different times for any person day to day, more or less potential anywhere one goes. The woman to whom I was speaking said, “Well, you look super white anyway, so you’re probably fine.” Surely our appearance is second in relevance to the heart and soul, the nature and identity which I, or anyone, feels. Culture and belonging are more than just visual cues. She seemed to think that trying to fit in was the answer to my dilemma... in her mind the only solution to a question that potentially has no answer.
