#MakingChange: leaders who are lifting as they climb.
Women of color presently account for only 5% of US college and university leaders, an inequity that demands an intersectional rethinking of pathways, supports, and barriers.
In 2022, The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), Morgan State University, and the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) launched Breaking the M.O.L.D. to develop a pipeline to higher education leadership for scholars in the arts and humanities—particularly women and Black, Hispanic, and American Indian/Alaska Native faculty working towards tenure.
Breaking the M.O.L.D. is also unique in its design with six women in senior leadership serving as principal investigators (PI), five of whom are Black. Kimberly Moffitt (right) dean of UMBC’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences and professor of language, literacy, and culture, serves as the project’s lead PI, while Patrice McDermott (left), UMBC's vice provost for faculty affairs, joins in leading its implementation.
