These are the hands of my godmother, my Aunt Ruby. I always remember her hands when I think of her. The hands I watched cook many meals after she got home from work. The hands that taught me how to tie my shoes. The hands that decorated wedding cakes. The hands that rubbed Watkins salve on my head and neck and chest when I was sick. I visited with Aunt Ruby this past July and I knew that she would not have been happy about pictures being taken of her face, even though to me she was beautiful despite being so sick. But, when you live to be 95 and in possession of all of your faculties, you get to call the shots on what images of you are out there. Thankfully, she allowed my cousin to take pictures of her hands for me. I have looked at them so many times since I last saw them in person, including last night when I found out that she took her last breath. I love you, Aunt Ruby. Say “Hi” to Mommy for me. And Nana and Gramps. Uncle Sonny, Uncle Hugh and Uncle Ron and I know you are dancing with your favorite Fella right now. Give Uncle Stan a kiss for me. We will miss you so much but your legacy of love will never be forgotten. Rest in power, Ruby Hyacinth, Marguerite’s Daughter, Stanley’s wife, Karen’s mother, Michael’s grandmother and Matthew and Madelyn’s great grandmother. Loving you always, Lisa. 🕊
