I find it so interesting that we’re so obsessed with strength and we have no idea what it means. We’re always trying to be these strong people who can get through anything without letting anyone see us struggle. The world is scary so you better be strong. Don’t be too loving with your sons they’ll be too soft. Your kids too old for you to be hugging them when they cry or kissing their boo boos, they won’t be prepared for life. Then we end up with people who have mistaken being angry, stubborn, controlling, guarded, emotionless, and violent as strength.
There’s so much strength in being soft, gentle, and loving because for a lot of us those concepts are foreign. True strength is being able to stand firm in who you are, open up every insecurity and wound against everything life has, and know you are still perfectly made and deserving. The only way to do that is to have a foundation of love. I know I will be hurt again, I know I will cry, I know I will break, and I know that through all of that I have the strength to love myself and accept love from others to rebuild.
You can’t pick and choose what parts of life you want to avoid. You either let it all in or you numb it all out. We all have a desire to be loved (not only romantically but seen for who we truly are) and if you want love you have to accept the pain, sadness, hurt, and rejection that comes with it. I’m willing to do it over and over and over again to get what I want. I think that makes me strong.
(Im not talking about our basic needs here. We of course need our basic needs met and you can’t love your way to shelter, food, water, basic human rights, etc)
