#MakingChange: Beyond the same old song and dance in classical music. How can we work to overcome the isolation and underestimation experienced by Black artists in classical music, as well as other sectors? For nearly 30 years, Gateways Music Festival has celebrated the achievements of professional classical musicians of African descent during a biennial summer festival in Rochester. More than 120 musicians typically partake in a vibrant and affirming week of performances, symposia, and a young musicians institute. With Mellon’s support, Gateways has grown from its origin as a volunteer-led organization. Having hired a full-time staff, it has made its biennial festival an annual event, initiated year-round programming, and embarked on its first tour, including the Gateways Orchestra’s sold-out debut at Carnegie Hall, in spring 2022. The Orchestra’s debut marked the first time an all-Black classical symphony orchestra has been presented by Carnegie Hall in its 130-year history, and its ongoing work ensures that others will soon follow.
