⭐ Ballie Gifford Winner ⭐
We were delighted to hear that Katherine Rundell had won this year's prize. The Baillie Gifford rewards excellence in non-fiction writing, bringing the best in intelligent reflections on the world to new readers. It covers all non-fiction in the areas of current affairs, history, politics, science, sport, travel, biography, autobiography and the arts.
The judges had this to say about Super-Infinite: Katherine Rundell’s glorious celebration of the life and work of the poet John Donne is our unanimous winner of the 2022 Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction. Exquisitely rendered, its passion, playfulness and sparkling prose seduced all of us. Rundell makes an irresistible case for Donne’s work to be widely read 400 years later, for all the electric joy and love it expresses. And in so doing, she gives us a myriad of reasons why poetry – why the arts – matter.
Rachel has also had a read and thought: In this deeply engaging biography, Rundell paints a portrait of the sometimes complicated, often difficult, but endlessly fascinating figure of the poet John Donne. It is both a scholarly and educated look at Donne's life, and a passionate and convincingly argued defence of the relevance and timelessness of his work.
Regardless of your interest in Donne, this is a truly fantastic piece of writing. Full of wit and humour, Katherine's infectious passion for her subject shines throughout.
This is one of my standout books of the year, and whether you're already a fan of John Donne or not, I couldn't recommend it more.
