growing up, i often heard my parents ask their friends, “bap meogeosuh? (밥 먹었어?)”, which translates to, “have you eaten?”. i’ve always found the colloquial phrase endearing, and have since formed a greater appreciation for it.
as @minsuh_ contextualizes in the Casa Francis exhibition text, “the phrase is deeply Korean in its politeness: its mundane and specific nature respects the boundaries of privacy while inviting a range of responses. Making use of this as a title, ‘Have you eaten today?’ draws our attention to eating as one of the most fundamental acts of care, and an intimate form of relating to the world.”
and so this show takes its title after an oft-used greeting from my homeland; its layered meaning feels particularly apt for this moment in history.
the 1920s spanish colonial residence that houses this exhibition is one that is deeply personal — it was our family home for three and a half years — and represents parts of me (and rich & turner) that feel the most true. there is no grandeur; it’s comfortable and cosy. i’ve long strived to share how i enjoy living with artworks in my own home; placing works that highlight one’s connection to their domestic space — to understand how the sun setting at 7:49pm in May will light up a particular corner (and thus a sculpture positioned there) near the window facing west. that kind of closeness and intimacy with our surrounding objects (artworks and otherwise) has enriched my day to day 🌞💛
