Repost: Jammie Holmes's "Brown Sparrow" (2020) is featured in @LACMA’s exhibition, "Afro-Atlantic Histories," on view through September 10, 2023. Through a series of dialogues across time, the exhibition features artworks produced in Africa, Europe, and the Americas in the last four centuries to reexamine—from a global perspective—histories and stories of enslavement, resilience, and the struggle for liberation. Says Holmes: "The brown sparrow, which appears in the work and lends its name to the title, references my grandmother’s backyard in Thibodeaux. A lush place always filled with roses and brown sparrows. The tricycle, enshrined in rays of sunlight, references the joys of youth and acts as a reminder that everyone had a childhood even if one has made mistakes later in life. The work is also a commentary on mass incarceration in the United States and I've integrated the American Flag into the background. The paisley design stands in for the flag’s stars, while the figure is placed in front of faint stripes on the facility’s wall, making an American Flag on its side." #JammieHolmes #LACMA #LibraryStreetCollective —— Installation photograph, Afro-Atlantic Histories, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, December 11, 2022–September 10, 2023, photo © Museum Associates/LACMA
