The world is "going in the wrong direction,” according to a new report.
The United In Science 2022 report, led by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), says the world is inching closer to dangerous “tipping points” in the climate system.
Key findings include:
• The past seven years were the hottest on record.
• Global temperatures are forecast to rise between 1.1C and 1.7C over the next five years. Without aggressive climate action, global warming is estimated to reach 2.8 C by the end of the century.
• National pledges on greenhouse gas emissions are not enough to hold global heating to 1.5 C.
• Climate-related disasters are causing $200m in economic losses every day.
• Nearly half the world's population is considered highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change — floods, heat, drought, wildfires and storms. Fewer than half of countries have early warning systems for extreme weather, to which WMO has promised to put every person on Earth under the protection of an early warning system within the next five years.
• By the 2050s, over 1.6 billion city-dwellers will regularly swelter through three-month average temperatures of at least 35 C.
• As warming increases, tipping points include the drying out of the Amazon rainforest, the melting of the ice caps, and the weakening of the Gulf Stream.
