Audrey Hepburn devoted a portion of her life to helping and providing resources to underprivileged children in countries all over the world. In 1988, she was elected Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF only receiving a $1 a year salary for her work. Audrey empathized greatly with the cause due to her own experiences with famine and instability during World War II as a child.
She visited several countries including Ethiopia, Turkey, Venezuela, Ecuador, Guatemala, El Salvador, Bangladesh, Thailand, Vietnam, Somalia and Sudan. In these countries she helped provide food and clean drinking water as well as training programs for underprivileged women and school children in an effort to better the education system in those areas. In addition she performed benefit concerts, spread awareness, participated in interviews as well as donated.
In 1991, Audrey was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush for her work – the highest honor any individual can receive in the United States.
