I had an abortion when I was 17. I’ve mentioned this before on this platform, but it feels relevant to do so again today. My mother knew I was pregnant before I did. She scheduled my OB/GYN appointment confirming as much, and then she found the quiet, safe suburban Philadelphia clinic run by a doctor and his wife, who held my hand during the vacuum aspiration. My mother waited in the waiting room, drove me home, and brought me ibuprofen as I bled and cramped for the two days that followed (pain medication was not legally allowed to be prescribed for this kind of procedure, despite the extreme discomfort that comes along with it). I will not hesitate to do the same for my daughter, no matter what a hypocritical, ideological court tells us we can and cannot do with our bodies.
Check on the women in your life. We are angry, we are sad, we are scared. Today, we grieve for the right to have agency over our own bodies. Tonight, in cities across this country, we fight the fight our Mothers fought for us, hoping we’d never have to do the same again.
Some good action steps in my stories from the great @sarahsophief and @heyjanehealth — and for anyone in states like New York, which recently fortified a woman’s right to choose, @brigidalliance and @apiaryps are wonderful organizations that provide technical and practical support to people who will now have to travel for safe abortion care. They need our money—and our apartments!
