Spoke to @StylistMagazine about the return of @Bridgerton to @Netflix, and the introduction of the Sharma sisters 😍. It’s taken a long time to get here, and I’m so happy to see more and more brown girls represented on western TV shows and films.
Especially when growing up we had such limited representation. Off the top of my head I can only remember the token family in Eastenders & Coronation Street. And even then, we were often reduced to one-dimensional stereotypes and tropes focusing solely on racial identity, rather than fully exploring the nuance of the character's humanity. But I do feel a shift happening.
It's so important to see positive representations of dark-skinned (in particular) South Asian women in film/TV and combat the usual stereotypes where South Asian women are often shown as quiet, docile and hardly ever involved in romantic storylines - not to mention how groundbreaking it is to see a dark-skinned South Asian women as main characters and depicted as love interests.
I haven’t gotten round to watching season 2 just yet, but I really hope the development and exploration of the Sharma sisters are treated equally to their white counterparts, rather than a tokenistic casting decision and allow us to fully see the breadth of the character's journey rather than focusing specifically on her heritage.
