Gareth Dawes, photographed at home for The Times, November 2022
"Racism, the London Fire Brigade and me" Gareth Dawes tried to fix racism within the London fire service — but ended up leaving.
“There is a feeling, in brigade headquarters, that what its firefighters do is heroic,” he says. “But for too long, people of colour have not been safe. Raising my voice, refusing to park my values, cost me my job. Ultimately, though, it was the hope that was hurting me.”

Thanks to the brilliant @sara_rumens and the hardworking team at The Times.
Yesterday i was called in the morning to photograph Gareth. As i drove to the shoot with my camera gear and lights i thought about everyone i know that has been silent about the systemic racism they have faced and witnessed at their jobs for years. May Gareth’s words encourage others to come forward and share their experiences, to make legal and institutional change in this country. In 2022 no one should have to deal with racism in their work environment.
What an honour it was to meet and photograph such a genuine person. A man brave enough to stand against racism at the cost of his job, a true role model for our generation. Thank you Gareth for your time yesterday.
