It's clear throughout scripture that God's will has always involved a rhythm of rest and restoration for our mind, body, and soul. Jesus says, "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." - Matthew 11:9
Mental rest: Taking a break from work tasks, including a mental break by not ruminating on work-related stressors. Practicing being present. Engaging in things that bring you joy. Taking a break from information overload.
Physical rest: Giving our body the restorative energy it needs- sleep, naps, stretching, deep breathing, a warm bath, lounging.
Sensory rest: Unplugging from the screens, devices and oversaturation of online chatter that can drain our senses by choosing to be present or get outside and get fresh air instead.
Spiritual rest: Being refilled and regrounded spiritually- worship, prayer, fellowship, scripture reading, connecting with God in nature.
This is what comes to my mind when thinking of different areas of rest. But Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, M.D., talks more about this in her Ted Talk asserting that there are 7 types of rest other than sleep (including creative rest, emotional rest and social rest).
What type of rest do you need this weekend and what does that look like for you? 🙏🏽❤️
