By making it to the finals at the Huntington Beach US Surfing Championships in 1969, I became a hazy blip on the surf radar. Throughout the 1970s, when surfboard design had evolved enough to enable some successful surfing at the Pipeline, I started to become what in Hawaii we called a name...that with a couple of dollars might buy you a plate lunch but you still had to stand in line like everyone else. Later on, the Indonesian island of Bali was found to have excellent surf. Petey and I spent many long seasons focusing our short spans of attention at a place called G-Land...that gave us great satisfaction. Life is a long and winding road with a lot of stuff constantly going on...you get to choose whether or not if it makes you smile...I say, go for the grin. Stacy Peralta, a bunch of others and with a lot of help from Patagonia have created a film about this ongoing road of mine...our hope is that it makes you smile. Details at: www.patagonia.com/gerry
