This patchworked painting of Abigail’s began earlier this year when she was invited to contribute an article to Issue 1 of the beautiful new publication @linseed_journal. She chose to document her work at the time extracting a colour palette from fruit woods, many of which ended up feeding into this piece currently on show in our exhibition.

“As we face the altering of our once reliable seasons, I turn to my work in the studio: a place I use to process our shifting relationship with nature. To unravel lost narratives and seek fresh stories within the fabric of plants and earth beneath our feet ...
I discovered that cherry bark relinquishes a rouge pink evocative of the first bite of its fruit. That young hawthorn whips release a blush akin to their blossom and later berries. And that plum gives a burnt orange reminiscent of sweet flesh beneath bitter skins. Pear, meanwhile, is as subtle in colour as it is in flavour.
It seems apt that these orchard woods produce a palette resonant of the soft pastels of spring, and the warm russets of autumn. A reminder to cherish and protect the ancient and tacit relationships we have to nature and to plants ...”
