COMPOSTING AT HOME (Part 2) Did you know that Up to half of the waste thrown out by the average Australian household is organic material? You might have seen our recent reel “Compost At home” showing you how to start a mini kitchen compost but that was just part 1. Today we’re going to build a bigger, outdoor compost bin that is designed to empty your smaller indoor one into! First I got myself a large bin with a lid from Mitre 10. It was roughly $50. Some other things I used here are dry leaves and twigs from the garden, soil, used coffee grounds, some old hero packs (cut up nice and small) and the contents of my little kitchen compost! Before I layered it all in the bin I had my hubby drill 2 small holes at the bottom of the bin for drainage and then tossed everything in one by one, finishing up with a drizzle of water and then giving it a good mix. In order for your compost to be happy you need to have a balance of green and brown material. Greens include food scraps, coffee grounds & garden scraps. Browns include dry leaves, twigs, newspaper & hero packs. Make sure you have 2-3 times as much brown as green otherwise it will stink! Aerate your pile every few days & you should be on your way!
