From antiquity to Shakespeare, classic Hollywood to Beyoncé, Cleopatra has long been the subject of fascination, in pop culture past and present. And the world premiere of “Antony and Cleopatra” channels that fascination — through fashion! Take a peek into our costume shop with senior costume production supervisor Galen Till. In these snapshots, she shows off what she and her colleagues have been working on: costumes fit for a queen! The first look in this photo gallery is indeed destined for the pharaoh herself, Cleopatra. It’s a glittering blue garment, shimmering like the light upon the River Cydnus. That is, after all, how she first meets her lover Mark Antony: floating across the waters on a barge, a vision of absolute beauty and power. The second outfit pictured here is a costume for one of Cleopatra’s soldiers — a much more traditional look than Cleopatra’s sparkling pantsuit. But the contrast is intentional. The shimmery blue pantsuit is a nod to depictions of Cleopatra as a glamazon in 1930s Hollywood. Other costumes harken to antiquity. Still others wink at the present day. “Antony and Cleopatra” is an exploration of power and image across the centuries — not to mention a steamy romance set against the geopolitics of the ancient world.
