A funny autumn story: The debate over wearing white after Labor Day ends when it comes to weddings, but apparently not everyone knows this nor why. Years ago at an autumn wedding that took place in the early evening, a guest came bounding out of a bathroom stall while I was washing my hands in a crowded restroom. She was wearing a stretchy white maxi dress and a good deal of fake gold jewelry. She took one look at everyone else wearing darker, though in some cases colorful, clothes suited for an evening semi-formal Wisconsin wedding in autumn. She announced loudly and proudly to the roomful of women, "Oh I forget everyone out here wears dark clothes all the time in winter, but I'm from Florida and it doesn't get cold." Ok, but it was cold that weekend. Half of the women looked away chuckling, while the rest looked at her and walked out. No one had the heart to tell her that it's taboo to wear white to another person's wedding (unless of course, if you're asked to by the couple getting married). It’s something I assumed everyone knows. Plus, wedding etiquette, especially when it comes to what's appropriate to wear when, is easy to find online and in books. Even if you're from Florida. So, wear whatever you want in November in River North 😹, but don't wear white to a wedding unless it's your own (or unless the marrying couple requests it).
