Duty bearers, the UN and the international community has so far failed to respond to the crisis of the arbitrary detention and disappearance of migrants. These agencies are well aware of the increasing problem however, are ineffectively addressing the issue. There is no doubt that the entirety of the Kafala system punishes migrant workers. More times than enough migrant workers under Kafala are faced with arbitrary detention that is openly facilitated by the Lebanese General Security forces with the support of duty bearers. Often, Migrant Domestic Workers (MDW) are detained without reason and sometimes this leads to their disappearance. Families and peers are not informed and MDW’s are denied legal assistance. The whereabouts and well-being is completely unknown and the hostile system is inaccessible to those advocating of behalf of detainees. It has been reported that Lebanese detention centres are inadequate, overcrowded and detainees lack their basic human rights. The treatment of detainees is inhumane and there have been several reports of torture and abuse. Indefinite and arbitrary immigration detention must end.
