Xiuhtezcatl’s Biography @xiuhtezcatl In only 22 years on Earth, Xiuhtezcatl Martinez, or X, has impacted with his words, actions and music on cultural and environmental change more than most of older political people of this era. Born in Colorado with native Mexican roots, he grew up with the fundamental awareness that each individual needs to live for the community’s wholeness as we are all intrinsically connected to each other and to the nature embracing us. Fighting for this since early age, X started taking TED talks, publishing books, speaking before the United Nation as well as being in charge as Youth Director of Earth Guardians Organization: at 13 he was given the US Volunteer Service Award by Barack Obama. But it was in 2015 that his popularity took off with the speech at the UN General Assembly on Climate Change which he took in English, Spanish and Nahuatl. Music then turns to be the crowing glory of X’s activism and multicultural personality. Merging different languages within the lyrics, his eco hip hop songs capture the attention of his generation sensitizing and empowering on environmental issues. During the 2015 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, his song “Speak for the Trees” was prized as the Jury Award Winner. The importance of living in and for a group is clear also in his music path, where alongside solo albums, X used to be part of a band with his sister and since 2020 has joined the music trio Voice Runners.
