Yesterday, a rare sight of 5 sperm whales made their way along the coast about 20 miles off Newport Beach! Even more rare, they were breaching which is a behavior more common for humpback whales, not these! Great capture by @seataceans who found them while captaining a trip with @pacificoffshore / @newportcoastaladventure who has the only whale watching boats in the area that can get out 20+ miles where these were. Sperm whales are the largest toothed whale and the third deepest diving marine mammals. They can dive up to 10,000 ft. below the surface in search of squid. They were once hunted to the brink of extinction but are slowly making a comeback. We don’t typically see them here since they spend most of their lives in the very deep water far from shore. Their migrations are unknown but are seen really all over the oceans.
