š„ Sober-Inclusive Art World Tips, inspired by the amazing @gabby_abrowne tips for sober options at events. š§
These tips are certainly not radical - nor advocating for a removal of all alcohol.
These recommendations are created to help remove (yet another!) barrier in the art world to many. āļø
Alcohol can provide a feeling of grandure to an event, particularly when free at a gallery or fair. However, events should not revolve around it, or be inaccessible without it.
The art world can be exclusionary and inaccessible, though art should be for all!!ļø
ā
āļø Openly and Clearly Offer Alcohol-Free Drinks (and make them delicious!)
During Private Views, Launches and Exhibitions, openly and clearly offer alcohol-free drinks.
Not just water. Make them delicious -
Mock-Tails, 0% Beers, Fizzy Drinks.
Serve them nicely to match the alcohol products. This should be non-negotiable with your venue.
š«Normalise not drinking alochol - and donāt ask the reason!
Remove the stigma around not drinking. There are so many reasons people donāt drink... and no one needs give a reason!
Not everyone who isnāt drinking are in recovery, though they might be. Guests may be pregnant, driving, not drink for religious or cultural reasons, donāt like alcohol, have medical reasons or just donāt fancy it. Donāt ask.
š¦ Consider if alcohol evenings need to be the standard.
Think outside the box.
The event shouldnāt need to revolve around alcohol.
For example, can you do a daytime launch? A launch surrounding a performance or activity?
Chances are, something new, will welcome new people to your space!
š§ Diversify your sponsors.
Many fairs and exhibitions include a champagne brand or alocholic sponsor. This can make guests feel excluded or unsafe.
This follows from the event type - a great time to think outside the box, or work with an alcohol free drinks sponsor too.
ā Donāt keep offering.
This is a given.
