In the fall I drove from Genoa to Lecce, crossing all of Italy overland in a Fiat Cinquecento. One of my stops was at the Carrara marble quarry in the Apuan Alps. The literal mountain of marble was founded by the Romans, serving as the marble source for the Pantheon and Trajan's column and later supplying great artists, like Da Vinci and Michelangelo.
