Over the last few weeks Afro-Mexicans have made incredible political strides with a successful annual Meeting of the Black Towns in Oaxaca and the 4th Annual Meeting of Afrodescendant Women in Mexico City. At each event, Afro-Mexicans celebrated their resilience, history, cultures and articulated a political agenda for 2023. Due to the work of organizers, the State of Mexico recently approved a draft decree that amends Article 17 of the Constitution giving recognition to Afro-Mexicans’ right to self-determination. The State of Mexico is the 5th federal entity to do so. We extend our love and support to our Afro family in Mexico as we advance our global movement to end state-sanctioned violence against Black people everywhere.
