Warning: long post about failure. After leaving ESPN, I spent 2 years trying to fulfill a lifelong dream of writing a movie. I often thought I wanted to see a movie about X, so why not just write it? People often complain about something from behind a keyboard but don’t do anything about it. Knowing the challenges of navigating an industry where you’re an extreme minority, that really irritates me. Despite having never written a screenplay (proper formatting is a real pain!), I gave myself 2 years to write and sell a screenplay. Had dreams of posting my success on social - what have I been up to? I sold a screenplay and it’s Asian AF! Ended up having some great talks w awesome producers, but ultimately time ran out as I had growing family responsibilities (translation: bills). Simply put, I failed. It sucked, but I moved on. Recently I watched a @netflix movie that had plot points and sequences very similar to what I wrote. It wasn’t identical, definitely wasn’t Asian AF, but it was admittedly much more polished. I had this weird feeling of pride when watching. Like damn, I was really close. It readjusted my perspective. I didn’t get the results I wanted, but I didn’t take an L either. I used to believe Yoda when he said “Do or do not. There is no try.” Not anymore. Cuz real ones know trying is hard AF. #screenwriting
