THE SPECTACULAR RED HYDROCORAL FORESTS OF THE PATAGONIA SEA With our partner @RewildingChile we have been exploring the sea of Patagonia, and we have found some animal forests of red hydrocorals (Errina antarctica). Animal forests of the sea have expanses of immobile marine animals like corals, in place of trees, and similar to forests above water, these act as a refuge for many species. The presence of this species has allowed incredible biodiversity to develop and persist in the Patagonia sea, but it has no protection in Chile. Its current conservation status is vulnerable, and these incredible forests face numerous threats such as climate change, pollution, salmon farming and the souvenir trade. By identifying where these red hydrocoral forests exist, we and Rewilding Chile can better create strategies for their protection.
