A while back we said we would do a cost breakdown of our #vivirprojectmowry kitchen. So here it is! Mowry was purchased as a flip, but my wife and I were expecting our second baby and fell in love, so we opted to sell our home and move in! Our budget was quite tight compared to a lot of the homes we share, and Mowry’s your run of the mill suburban home. Pouring a ton of money into it didn’t make sense. Our budget was $65K for the home with $25K allotted for the kitchen (spoiler alert... we blew past it) We wanted a custom high end look, and had to be creative to get there. First thing we realized the budget didn’t allow for was full custom cabinetry. We wanted a two tone kitchen with the back pantry cabinet wall and island both in oak. To save money we decided to do all the white cabs with affordable pre-fab, and only go custom for the oak. When we got quotes back our dreams were crushed and realized we couldn’t afford to do the island in oak as well. So we decided to do the island cabs in the cheaper pre-fab white, but clad the front of the island in oak. That’s when the quartz waterfall was introduced in the design (to make that transition seamless). You’ll notice the front of the island appears oak, but in the kitchen alley view, the island is white. We also kept the original small pantry to save on cost of additional custom cabs, and instead added that cute arch door. All appliances were scratch and dent, and many fixtures were open box. We also had some great partnerships that resulted in discounted materials. The biggest cost saver was putting in sweat equity and doing as much as we could ourselves. I’m forever in debt to my BFF @az_ultrarunner who did so much great custom work, and helped with install of basically everything. He essentially worked for cost + high fives, pizza, and the occasional man hug and singalong. That’s the reason you will see labor costs so low.
