157 years ago today, the last enslaved Black Americans learned of and seized their freedom, marking the end of 246 years of slavery in our country. As we honor this #Juneteenth, it is critical we all acknowledge the work that remains on our nation’s horizons — from the unaffordable housing crisis keeping families from the safety their freedom depends on to a prison labor industry paying Black men and women fractions of the federal minimum wage, diverse communities continue to be deprived their deserved opportunities for prosperity. And so, it is our shared responsibility to pursue an America where they can reach them. May today continue to serve as a clarion call reiterating that undeniable fact.
