Hi there, I’m Brian and I run Wooden Sleepers. Been getting a lot of new followers on here, so I thought I’d introduce myself. I started Wooden Sleepers back in 2010 as the first online curated vintage menswear shop specializing in outdoors, ivy, military and workwear - a greatest hits of American style. The brand is routed in my upbringing on the North Fork of Long Island, a rural/coastal area known for farming and fishing.
In 2014, I opened the first Wooden Sleepers bricks and mortar store in Red Hook, Brooklyn with no loans, no investors, and no partners. The buildout was done by me, and my friends and family. It was a dream come true! GQ named Wooden Sleepers, “The best new vintage store in NYC”. The New York Times called us, “An oasis of cool”. New York Magazine included us in their “Best of New York” issue. My small shop on Van Brunt Street became a destination for vintage lovers from all over the world. Didn’t hurt that @sunnysbarofficial was around the corner.
In 2020 things came to a grinding halt due to the Covid-19 pandemic. I was forced to close my shop in Red Hook, a heartbreaking process, but one that allowed me to take a breath and think about what was next for Wooden Sleepers. After careful consideration, I decided to leave NYC retail behind. Part of what informed that decision was having two small children at home that I wanted to spend more time with. So, I decided to shift the business to online, right back where I started.
For the past five years I have operated Wooden Sleepers out of my shop in the village of Tuckahoe, NY, in southern Westchester. I can walk home in five minutes. Life if good. Private shopping appointments are available for those who crave an “in-real-life” experience. The biggest development since closing my shop was having time to pursue working with some of my favorite brands like Ralph Lauren, J. Crew, Todd Snyder, Sperry, Brooks Brothers, J. Press, Huckberry, and currently L.L.Bean. If you are interested in learning more about any of those projects, you can scroll back to 2020. (Continued in comments)
