We want to congratulate the legendary Serena Williams for winning the first-round match of her farewell US Open. We recently acquired a piece titled ‘She Holds the Key’ that was created by @simoneelizabethtextiles and is a part of our permanent collection in the ‘Craft in the Lab’ exhibition at Mint Museum Uptown. The beautiful textile is a vibrant depiction of Serena Williams, the legendary tennis champion. The artist renders Williams as strong, muscular, and fearless, “surrounded by symbols of surveillance and scrutiny that Black women like Serena experience."
