Doomsday looms larger in the public imagination today for several reasons, including climate change and potential nuclear holocaust (i.e., Putin’s saber-rattling). The recent successful NASA mission to redirect the path of an asteroid introduced The Post’s Joel Achenbach to such scientists as NASA’s Planetary Defense Officer. “I think we can all agree that this sounds like important job,” Achenbach writes. The Planetary Defense Officer focuses on the detection of dangerous asteroids and comets that might threaten to strike the Earth (as in the movies “Don’t Look Up” and “Armageddon” and “Deep Impact”). It is one of many less-considered modern existential threats, including killer viruses, economic collapse, political extremism, solar flares and killer robots. Read the guide to contemporary doomsday scenarios — from the threats you know about to the ones you never think of — through the link in our bio. (Illustration: @fakediegopatino)
