As New York emerged from lockdown, so too did new standards for public artistry—including new policies that allow for performances in the public square such as sidewalks, plazas, and streets. It’s a shift that has introduced exciting opportunities and big logistical challenges alike. How have communities responded? In the case of Turnout NYC—a Mellon-funded program spearheaded by @situ_nyc and @designtrustnyc—the path ahead begins with design. In the last year, Turnout NYC has activated five flexible and semi-permanent outdoor performance venues—one in each of New York’s five boroughs—in collaboration with cultural partners and artists.
