When it comes to understanding vaginal issues and conditions, representations in pop culture haven’t done us a whole lot of favours.
Take SATC and Charlotte’s so-called “depressed vagina” for example (can you already hear the Clue Science team muttering in the background of this social post?)
What the show is actually talking about is vulvodynia: vulvar pain of at least 3 month’s duration without identifiable cause and with potential associated factors.
The Clue Science team explains: “First of all vulvodynia refers to the external genitalia or the vulva. The vagina is the internal area and the two are separate. The term ‘depressed vagina’ is an oversimplification and a misnomer that seems to have come about because people have been given antidepressants as a treatment for vulvodynia. It’s certainly not a term that should be used in any context today.”
