‘That's what artists do, James. Take from each other, learn from each other. That's what we're doing here, in our little artist's colony. James fingered his cup. It doesn't seem right, Mr Lloyd.’
#TheColony is a softly powerful and beautiful read about language, art, and colonising using an unnamed island to focus on the Irish troubles.
An English artist and a French linguist visit this Irish island and fight over who has the right to be there and the fate of the islanders without asking what the islanders actually want (what a shock).
I absolutely adored the way it was written, you were never told by subtitle whose point of view you were reading but it was immediately obvious by the way it was written which was so unique and clever I found myself absorbed in the story. Interspersed with descriptions of deaths during the troubles of 1979, it’s hard not to see the allegory of the island.
This novel is such a thought provoking read, I learnt so much from reading it but also begun to think more about what I haven’t learnt. #TheColony is a cleverly written, beautiful, thought provoking read that will have you enraptured with its unique storytelling and a cast of characters you will come to adore. Just wow.
Q: have you read this one? What did you think?
