My mother and I had a long-standing annual tradition of seeing Alvin Ailey’s tour de force Revelations together every December. Watching the most magnificent dancers I had ever seen soar to the heights of body and spirit, I always left expanded, enlivened, ennobled - hopeful about the breath and breadth that might live in my own body. And now the @whitneymuseum brings us a revelation of their own in the exhibition Edges of Ailey, a groundbreaking exploration of the art, the artist, the artist’s world and the artists he inspired today. To hug the legendary Carmen de Lavallade in front of the exquisite portrait of her by her husband, the equally legendary Geoffrey Holder (slide 4). To laugh and dance with the ever-extraordinary Ben Vereen and his equally extraordinary daughter @karondavis in front of her mesmerizing sculpture capturing the boundless energy of Judith Jameson in Ailey’s work (slide 6 & 9).
