If you’re looking for a fun/easy/educational art activity to do at home with your kiddos my nonprofit project @countercurrent_art put this instructional video together with support from the Johnson Ohana Foundation and @kokuahawaiifoundation
.
I’ve been making impressions of trash collected off beaches and streets since 2014 and in recent years I’ve started sharing my technique and philosophy with kids as a way to engage them in the issue of ocean plastic pollution. I’ve done this activity at dozens of venues around the world using ocean trash to print on reusable tote bags as a way of starting conversations with folks young and old, but over the last two years I haven’t had many opportunities for this kind of outreach. So that’s where the idea for this video came from- hopefully people can have fun with this from the comfort of their own homes.
.
I first got the idea to make trash prints because I love the work of the late Robert Rauschenberg and his “Automobile Tire Print” piece got me fired up. My interest in printmaking went into overdrive in 2016 when I started spending summers in Japan studying bluefin tunas and was surrounded by the Japanese tradition of gyotaku (fish printing). Printing fish is like capturing a memory, and I thought it would be interesting to expand that idea to capture the memory of plastic materials that photodegrade into smaller and smaller pieces but won’t truly biodegrade for centuries.
.
Big hugs to my talented video wizard buddy @shimizujones for shooting and editing! Also thanks to music shredder @cole_sandman for letting us use his track. Happy printmaking! #plasticpollutionawareness #oceanart #printmaking #trashart #kidartprojects
