This view of Europa is in a different league ⚽⠀
⠀
The complex, ice-covered surface of Jupiter’s moon Europa was captured by @NASASolarSystem’s Juno spacecraft during a flyby on Sept. 29, 2022. At closest approach, the spacecraft came within about 219 miles (352 kilometers).⠀
⠀
Launched on August 5, 2011, Juno has blazed a mission beyond its original five-year journey to our solar system’s largest planet, Jupiter. Now in its extended mission, Juno is now an explorer of the full Jovian system, which expands to Jupiter’s outer rings and moons. ⠀
⠀
JunoCam images help fill in gaps in the maps from images obtained by Voyager and Galileo missions. Citizen scientists have provided unique perspectives of the Juno’s recent flyby - citizen scientist Björn Jónsson processed the image to enhance the color and contrast, revealing Europa’s surface features. Using raw images taken by JunoCam, the spacecraft’s public-engagement camera, these Europa photographs were reprocessed by interested members of the public to create deep-space portraits of the Jovian moon that aren’t only awe-inspiring but also worthy of further scientific scrutiny.⠀

Image Description: Jupiter’s moon Europa as captured by NASA’s Juno spacecraft. The grey and white surface of Europa takes center stage, its surface revealed to be rugged, with pits and troughs spread across the planet reminiscent of a root ball. The leftmost third of the moon is shrouded in the black of night, at the day-night boundary numerous bright and dark ridges and bands stretch across a fractured exterior, revealing the tectonic stresses Europa endured over millennia. The moon stands in bright contrast to the darkness of space in the background.⠀
